Wire Sawing

What Is Concrete Wire Sawing?

Diamond wire sawing uses a continuous loop of steel cable embedded with industrial diamonds to cut through concrete, steel, masonry and other challenging materials. The wire is guided around pulleys and pulled continuously through the material; as it moves, the diamonds grind a smooth, precise cut. The whole process is water-cooled to prevent overheating and keep dust production down.

It’s a technology with serious credentials: diamond wire is the same method used to dismantle decommissioned airplanes and submarines. Where a circular blade is limited by its diameter, a wire saw has no practical thickness limitation. We’ve successfully cut through concrete sections over 10 feet thick.

Just as important is what wire sawing doesn’t do: vibrate. The cut is vibration-free, which eliminates the risk of damage to adjacent buildings, sensitive equipment and utilities, making it the method of choice around historic structures, hospitals, active facilities and anything with existing cracks.

Wire sawing rounds out our concrete cutting services, and Siler’s has been cutting across Seattle, Tacoma and Western Washington since 1999, taking on the thick, odd-shaped, high-stakes cuts a blade can’t make and other outfits pass on.

When You Need It

What Wire Sawing Is Used For

Wire sawing is a specialty service, not an everyday cut: it comes off the truck when a section is too thick, too oddly shaped or too close to something fragile for any blade. These are the wire sawing calls we take across Western Washington:

01

Thick Structural Elements

Massive walls, piers, footings and structural members beyond any blade’s reach. The wire cuts clean through sections several feet thick.

02

Odd Shapes & Awkward Geometry

Round columns, curved walls, piers and sections a blade can’t follow. The wire wraps the shape and cuts it clean, as on the round steel support columns we wire sawed at set elevations at Crystal Mountain.

03

Highways, Bridges & Infrastructure

Cutting for highway and bridge construction, tunnels, airports and utility trenches, heavy civil work where controlled, predictable cuts keep projects moving.

04

Industrial & Municipal Facilities

Manufacturing plant modifications, power plant maintenance and water treatment facility upgrades, demanding environments our crews know how to work in.

05

Controlled Demolition

Sectioning heavy concrete into liftable pieces for removal, vibration-free cutting that protects everything around the piece coming out.

06

Steel & Heavily Reinforced Sections

Concrete-filled steel columns, rebar-dense members and composite sections that would wreck a blade. Diamond wire pulls through steel and concrete alike at a steady, controlled rate.

Equipment & Capabilities

No Thickness Limit. No Vibration.

Our wire saws run continuous diamond-embedded cable around guided pulleys, so cut depth is never limited by a blade diameter. From thin walls to structural elements several feet thick, the wire pulls through at a steady, controlled rate with a smooth finish and minimal material waste. And it can be rigged to cut in almost any direction or shape, including tight spaces other equipment can’t reach.

The operation is water-cooled, quieter than conventional sawing and completely vibration-free, which is why hospitals, historic buildings and active facilities that must remain operational choose wire sawing over every other method.

Not every cut needs the wire. Standard wall openings are wall sawing work, slabs and pavement call for flat sawing, and round penetrations are core drilling. We’ll match the method to the job in your free estimate.

Commercial Wire Sawing

Commercial & Industrial Wire Sawing Across Washington

Wire sawing is a commercial-first specialty: complex projects that demand precision and efficiency, from office and retail tenant improvements to healthcare facility upgrades, highways, bridges and critical infrastructure. Time is money on these jobs, so we work to minimize downtime and disruption, including nights and weekends, to keep your project on time and on budget.

The same crews handle every heavy cut on the schedule, whatever the tool. And most jobs don’t need the wire at all. Recent thick-section projects across the Puget Sound region, with the wire and alongside it:

How It Works

How Wire Sawing Works with Siler’s

A cut-only contractor leaves the break-out and the haul-off to somebody else. Siler’s cuts to your marked lines, breaks out the sections and hauls them off with one crew, so nothing falls between subs.

01

Free Estimate

Call (206) 901-9383 or send us the section dimensions and site conditions. Wire saw jobs get scoped fast. And with 24/7 availability we work around your schedule.

02

Rig & Plan

We map the cut, rig the pulleys and, when you want to know what’s inside the concrete first, arrange GPR scanning to locate rebar, conduit and post-tension cables.

03

Pull the Wire

The diamond wire runs continuously through the section, water-cooled, vibration-free and controlled from the first inch to the last, whatever the thickness.

04

Rig Out & Remove

Cut sections are rigged, lifted and hauled off through our concrete breaking & disposal service. And if concrete needs to go back, our trench pour-back crew pours it back.

Sound Familiar?

✕  An opening that’s out of square, so the frame or the duct doesn’t fit.

✕  A second sub to schedule for haul-off, and a third for the pour-back.

We built our process to take every one of these off your plate. One call. One crew. One line on your schedule.

Wire Sawing FAQs

Concrete Wire Sawing Questions, Answered

A continuous loop of steel cable embedded with industrial diamonds is guided around pulleys and pulled through the material. As the wire moves, the diamonds grind through the concrete or steel, leaving a smooth, precise cut, while water cooling prevents overheating and keeps dust down. It’s the same technology used to dismantle decommissioned airplanes and submarines. Concrete walls don’t stand a chance.

There’s no practical thickness limitation. Traditional saws are limited by their blade diameter, but the wire simply wraps the section and pulls through, from thin walls to massive structural elements. Our crews have successfully cut concrete sections over 10 feet thick.

Yes. It’s the safest cutting method for working near existing structures. The operation is completely vibration-free, which eliminates the risk of damage to adjacent buildings, sensitive equipment and utilities. That makes it ideal for historic buildings, hospitals with sensitive medical equipment, active facilities that must remain operational, and structures with existing cracks or damage.

When the section is beyond blade reach or vibration is a deal-breaker. Our wall saws cut up to 36 inches deep and our flat saws handle slabs and pavement. For anything thicker, oddly shaped or pressed against something fragile, the wire saw takes over. We run all three, so you get the right method, not the one tool a smaller outfit happens to own.

No. Wire sawing is a specialty method for thick structures, odd shapes and anything a blade can’t cut. Most residential work (basement window and door openings, foundation modifications for plumbing, pool cutting) is wall sawing or flat / slab sawing, and we’ll tell you which in your free estimate. The wire comes out when nothing else will make the cut.

It depends on the section’s thickness and material, the rigging the cut requires, and site access. Every wire job is engineered to the specific cut. We quote them free: call (206) 901-9383 with your project details and we’ll give you a fast, accurate number.
